Two kinds of population figure

2026 estimates are modelled projections from UNFPA for 1 March 2026. They are forecasts, not a Census. 2011 counts are the actual Census enumeration. We show both, side by side, and never pretend one is the other.

Why the state and district totals differ by 997

The UNFPA state figure is 13,22,65,000; the 38 district figures sum to 13,22,65,997. Both are published source values. We keep both and disclose the difference rather than “fixing” it.

What “urban” and “literate” mean

These are Census 2011 definitions. Urban means the Census classification of a place, not how built-up it looks. Literacy is for ages seven and above. Neither has a 2026 version on this site.

Why some pages say “Not supplied”

We do not invent opening hours, ticket prices, travel times or accessibility details. If a source does not state it, we say “Not supplied” and link you to the official source.

Sources and reuse

Every number, photograph and route has a source, a date and a licence. The source register is at /sources/. Photographs are resized renditions; reuse terms are linked beside each image.
