Start with a question.
A way into Bihar's data, places and conversations. Each answer keeps its source and its limits in view.
01 / LANGUAGE
How Bihar speaks.
A census category and the name someone uses at home do not always tell the same story.
The Census of India’s 2011 C-16 table is a count of reported mother tongues. In its Bihar table, Bhojpuri, Magadhi/Magahi and Surjapuri appear as mother-tongue rows within the larger Hindi language grouping. Maithili is presented as a separate language, with its own mother-tongue rows. This is how the table classifies responses; it is not a ruling on how a community should name its language.
Scheduled-language status, a person’s reported mother tongue and the language grouping used for a Census table answer different questions. A row can be visible within a grouping even when it is not the grouping’s headline. The table also cannot tell us how many people chose “Hindi” while speaking another variety at home, so an undercount cannot be measured from that row alone.
People disagree about where Angika, Bajjika and Maithili begin and end. Treating the Census categories as the final word would erase that debate; treating an online discussion as a population survey would be just as misleading.

02 / BANKING
Where does the money go?
A credit–deposit ratio can point to a gap. It cannot follow an individual rupee.
The ratio compares outstanding bank credit with deposits for a defined place and date. A ratio of 50% means the reported stock of credit is half the reported deposit stock; it does not establish that the other half was lent to a particular state. Nor does it count every informal loan or every microfinance lender.
2025: ₹5,68,726 crore in deposits and ₹2,92,274 crore in credit, or 51.4%.
Scheduled commercial banks, by place of sanction; deposits exclude inter-bank deposits. Source values are in ₹ crore, and the ratio is calculated here from those values. The series and definition differ from other bank reporting aggregates; do not substitute one ratio for another.
The Reserve Bank distinguishes credit by place of sanction and by place of utilisation, and its lead-bank guidance uses different measures at different levels. A district ranking needs the same reporting date, institutions and definition for every district. Until the underlying Bihar district tables are checked on that basis, we do not present a district league table or attribute a household’s debt to a single cause.
To understand borrowing costs, the next question is who can access credit, on what terms and from which institution. A low bank ratio alone does not establish why a particular borrower uses a microfinance loan.

03 / WATER
A river is more than its banks.
Embankments can protect places from a river’s spill while changing the risks faced around them.
Bihar’s flood centre describes Himalayan rivers carrying sediment onto the plains. It also describes protection from embankments and the danger when they are breached. The same source records backwater effects where a tributary meets a flooding Ganga. These mechanisms vary by river and location: a single line on a map cannot describe the whole floodplain.
The 2008 Kosi breach at Kusaha is a documented example of an embankment failure with consequences across Nepal and Bihar. Historic flood extent is not a current warning, and our existing river lines are simplified global centrelines, not a flood-hazard layer.
Crossings matter to the road network, but a closed bridge does not automatically sever every possible route. A reliable closure simulation needs verified bridge locations, a complete road graph and current operational data. Our retained journeys do not provide those.

04 / WORK & LAND
Fields, products and factories.
A crop grown in a district and a factory processing it are two different parts of a supply chain.
The district factbooks bring together reported 2024–25 crop production and the 2024 One District One Product list. The crop figures measure output by weight, not yield per hectare, farm earnings or the number of processing factories. A designated product is a policy selection, not proof that every stage of production takes place within the district.
Questions about freight equalisation, land availability and food processing deserve historical and district-level evidence. The records currently on this site do not establish that one policy alone explains Bihar’s industrial history, or that a particular crop automatically makes a factory viable.

What did the Census count?
Select a district to see the 2011 benchmark, then follow it into the factbook.
Census literacy rates on this site refer to people aged seven and above. The women’s figure uses the source’s female category and is rounded to one decimal place. A survey’s sentence-reading test may use a different age group, question and sample. Its percentage cannot be treated as the same measure or as a direct update of this Census rate.
In the rounded 2011 district figures used here, 17 of Bihar’s 38 districts had a female literacy rate below 50%. They include Saharsa, Madhepura, Supaul, Araria, Purnia, Kishanganj and Katihar. This is a count of Bihar districts in the 2011 series, not a measure of the number of districts in India today.

06 / CONNECTIONS
How far is the nearest connection?
A distance, a route and a usable service are three separate things.
On 15 September 2025, a government release reported the opening of Purnea’s terminal and its first commercial flight. That is a dated milestone, not a guarantee that a particular flight is operating today. Read the release ↗
An airport or railway station needs a verified location and operating status before it can be presented as a travel option. To compare travel times from all 38 district headquarters, we would also need a consistent road-network calculation, a common date and clearly defined start and end points.
The journeys on this site are retained car-profile route snapshots, not a live routing service. They do not account for current closures, weather or traffic. We do not infer that a facility is operational, or draw a 30-minute catchment, from an unverified point.

07 / METHOD
How we count people.
A matching name is a reason to check a record, not proof that two records describe the same person.
Lists are built for different purposes. A Census counts people under its rules; an electoral roll records eligible registered electors; a survey estimates characteristics from a sample. Their denominators and reference dates differ, so one total should not silently replace another.
Similar names, ages or relatives’ names can identify records worth reviewing, but they cannot on their own establish duplicate people or fraudulent votes. The Election Commission’s electoral-roll manual calls for verification and due process when potential duplicates are found.
The same care applies to geography. In the district population data used here, East and West Champaran’s population triplets were transposed in a source feed. We checked the district identities against independent official records and documented the correction, rather than silently swapping every field with a similar name.
